LA's Promise Students Show Continued Improvement on 2011 CST

West Adams Prep and Manual Arts High School improve across all subjects on standardized tests Los Angeles, CA (August 17, 2011) - Results from the May 2011 California Standards Test (CST) show steady growth for students at West Adams Prep and Manual Arts High Schools, two schools operated by LA's Promise (formerly MLA Partner Schools) in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Both high schools are headed in the right direction, standing out as leaders among other schools in both the iDesign and Public School Choice initiatives. Twenty percent of LA's Promise students are proficient or advanced in English Language Arts and seven percent in Math.

"We still have a ways to go to meet average high school proficiency standards but these are clear steps that indicate our schools are moving in the right direction. West Adams continues to grow in school-wide CST scores. Over four years, there has been a 6% increase in students who are proficient or advanced in English Language Arts (ELA) and a 5% increase in students scoring proficient or advanced in math. Notable is the hard working West Adams social studies department, which is responsible for a four year 16% increase in the number of 10th-grade students scoring proficient or advanced on the World History test. Tenth grade life science scores at West Adams increased by 4% over one year. Additionally, West Adams has experienced a sharp 15% decline in students who are below or far below basic in English Language Arts (ELA) and a 10% decline in students below or far below basic in Math over the past four years.

At Manual Arts, the number of students scoring proficient or advanced in Math doubled from 3% to 6% in one year. Ninth grade students achieved stand out results this year. The number of 9th graders scoring proficient or advanced in Algebra tripled (from 3% to 9%). The one-year increase in World History (6%) and US History (4%) for proficient or advanced 10th and 11th graders respectively, shows great strides. Manual Arts experienced a 8% decline in students scoring below or far below basic in ELA and a 3% decline in Math over a one year period.

These CST increases are coupled with important indicators of West Adams' achievement, such as improved CAHSEE results (reported earlier this year), the school's continued high attendance rate - at 94% - and the number of seniors attending four-year colleges, which has tripled over the past four years - from 9% to 30%. The four year drop out rate declined significantly at West Adams (from 33 to 17%).

With the newly designed Freshman Prep Academy and leadership's focus on quality teaching, curriculum and assessment, Manual Arts saw significant increases in student proficiency with CAHSEE pass rate increasing by 10% -- which is the highest increase in LD7. Although the decline in the drop out rate was modest, Manual Arts, historically one of the lowest performing schools in the State, has undergone a series of fundamental changes. LA's Promise worked aggressively to move the school from three tracks to one track, thereby providing 22 additional instructional days for students. Seniors attending a four year college nearly doubled in one year from 18% to 32%. LA's Promise is optimistic about the drop-out intervention program being implemented this coming fall.

The CSTs are developed by California educators and test developers specifically for California. They measure students' progress toward achieving California's state-adopted academic content standards in English–language arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and history–social science, which describe what students should know and be able to do in each grade and subject tested. Results were released by the state Department of Education on Monday.
